Overview

El-Roi Foundation is a Nigerian NGO that exists to raise men and women of value, character and purpose, through training, mentorship and outreach. I built and look after its website.

Context

The foundation runs trainings, events and outreach, and depends on volunteers, partners and donors. It needed a site that tells its story with conviction and makes it easy to join an event, get involved or give.

The problem

Most people find an NGO on their phone, often on patchy mobile data, from a link someone shared. A heavy site with large photos and video would lose them before the mission statement loaded.

My role

I built the site on my own from a Bootstrap base and shaped it around the foundation's content: the hero and mission, vision, leadership, events, causes, donations and contact. I have kept updating it as their programmes change.

Thinking

  1. Lead with the why

The home page opens on the foundation's calling, "Raising a convocation of mighty men", then moves straight to mission, vision and what they actually do, so visitors understand the purpose before being asked for anything.

    purpose before the ask

  2. Plain HTML, on purpose

A static site needs no server, costs almost nothing to host and is easy to hand over. For an NGO with no technical staff, that matters more than a framework.

    boring tech, fewer bills

  3. Tune for real phones

I worked through PageSpeed findings: compressing the video, sizing images to how they are displayed and trimming what loads first.

    tested where it's used

Solution

A static, multi-page site with sections for the mission and the foundation's identity, leadership, events with flyers, causes, a revamped donate section and contact details, plus a sitemap and robots rules for search.

What was built

  • Mission-led hero, with mission, vision and a stats counter
  • Events section for flyers and upcoming programmes
  • Leadership and team pages
  • Donate section and clear calls to get involved
  • Training cards with a certificate viewer
  • Compressed video, right-sized images and PageSpeed fixes

Outcome

The site is live at elroifoundation.com.ng, and I have continued to update it with new events, leadership changes and features since launch.

Reflection

For a small organisation, the best technical choice is often the one they can keep running without you.
